Newcastle University and Historic England’s Archaeological Projects team are co-directing an extended programme of excavation and geophysical survey at the English Heritage-curated site of Birdoswald Roman Fort on Hadrian’s Wall.
The research aims of the Project are designed to examine the chronological and functional relationship between the Roman fort at Birdoswald and the adjacent extra-mural settlements. Alongside the research aims is a robust training agenda. The project is designed to enable university students to receive state-of-the-art field instruction, covering excavation, integrated digital field recording and laboratory skills.
Fieldwork began in June 2021, and will continue to at least 2024.
We look forward to welcoming you to the site,
Ian Haynes (Newcastle University), Tony Wilmott (Historic England Archaeological Projects Team)
